Arts Festival

The Room 1 children are busking at the Arts Festival. We did clown tricks for the people waiting to go in to see the performances. We did pastel drawings and screen print pictures to display in our room. All the parents came to have a look at our fabulous art work. It was fun.

Xmas Letters

We wrote letters to Santa and decorated the envelope as well. This is Sonya's letter. We are going to walk to the post box to post them. We hope Santa will have time to send us a reply before Christmas.

Gus's Story

Gus wrote "We are at the zoo." He drew this beautiful picture in his story book today, and wrote the story by himself.

We read the book Little Yellow Digger saves the Whale. Look at Stephanie's beautiful drawing of the orca.

WOW WOW!

WOW, the walking or wheeling dog visited us at school this morning. Many of the children walk to school from the domain on Wednesday mornings to encourage children to enjoy being fit. Most children live a long way from our school and need to come in busses or cars. On Wednesdays they go to the domain instead, and are escorted to school by parents and teachers.

Today was the first day back at school after our terrifying earthquake. Although many parts of Canterbury have been badly damaged, here in Springston we were really lucky to have sustained little damage. Power, water and sewerage services were restored very quickly. Amazingly the children's news this morning was about pet lambs and new toys.

These are some memories that the children have about the earthquake.

Ben:-
My dad found all the fish on the carpet. We picked up all the stones and stuff. And then our next door neighbour came round to check our house. The fish tank broke.

Aria:-
Our pictures fell off the walls. We had cracks in the concrete outside our house. The wine
glasses fell off and broke.
Rule Number One:- we have to wear shoes in the kitchen!

Raewyn:-
When we had "the big one" we moved into Graeson's bedroom and Mum slept there too.
Some of my toys fell down on the floor.

Jaimee:-
All of our food fell out of the pantry. Lots of glass was broken.

Gus:-
All of our stuff fell off the shelf. I went to hide in Mum and dad's bed. When it got light we
got up and saw all of our stuff. We put on our slippers.

Lachie:- (It was Lachie's first day at school today!)
My mirror smashed in the bathroom. My puppy was in my bed. My puppy was shaking.

Starting School Party

In Room 1 this term we are expecting a lot more children to start school on their 5th birthday. We had a party to welcome them, and their parents. They played party games and had party food. The senior A+ leaders prepared the food and organized the games, while their parents had some time to have morning tea with the staff.

The children were given a bag to take home with activities, games and books which will be useful while preparing the children for their next big step – starting school.

Book Week

Book Week was an amazing experience for all the children. We had some wonderful guests and special activities. These included a book fair, drop everything and read, teachers reading their favourite books to different classes, and a performance about the children's book awards. For the Dress-up day we had pirates, Aurora, Madeline, Bob, fairies and many other story book characters. Everyone used their imagination and looked fantastic.

Elan being Adventurous on the slide at Science Alive

Elan was adventurous when he went down the huge slide at Science Alive. It drops straight down but curves at the bottom so you don’t hurt yourself. He said it was amazing.

Scarecrow's Story

The Room 1 children made a scarecrow for the school vegetable garden. They had to work together to get the job done. When he lost his chair they used their green thinking hats to work out how to find it. Some children went looking for it. Some children wrote letters to all the classes. They all followed different pathways and eventually the chair was returned!

Kiwi Sport

Recently we had Kiwi Sports. Some Lincoln University students came and ran them at school. Our senior buddies helped them. Parachute games help us to work together to achieve our goals. We need to cooperate together. It was great fun.

Sifting for Gold!

In Room 1 we are learning about mixtures and how to separate them. Here we are, searching for 'gold'!

Can you see the little pieces of 'gold' shining in the sand? We are sifting through the sand to find the 'gold'.
