The Dental Van

This week the dental nurses arrived in a huge van. It had a bed in it and a kitchen, and an office desk. Some of our class were really disappointed that they didn't get to look inside, so here is a picture of Poppy wearing sunglasses and lying down on the bed. Doesn't she look COOL!

And later in the day Poppy's wobbly tooth fell out. She went to show the dental nurses the big hole. They were VERY surprised!

Today was Pet Day. We all brought our pet or a toy animal to school. There were lamb drinking races, dressed up dogs, and pony rides. We saw all kinds of animals including fish, water snails, turtles, guinea pigs, mice, reptiles, cats, ducklings, hens, goats, calves, lambs, ponies, rabbits and dogs. It was a wonderful day.

Good Things Take Time!

Today we had a visit from Liz Weir. She is a story teller. She brought her puppets and told us wonderful stories about how it took a long time to learn to work together with them. They were naughty sometimes! This puppet was learning the words to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" but he got them all wrong on purpose.

Pathways to Acceptance

This term we have been doing "Time Team" activities. We have looked at past civilisations and at how the Olympics started. We have even looked way back to the dinosaur times! We discussed why people have to work together in teams and take on different roles. Then we decided that everyone is different and we all find different things easy or hard. To be a good Springston Learner we have to be accepting of these differences because we can all learn from each other. This helps to build richly exciting civilisations like those in the past.

Please read and enjoy our wonderful book.

World Teacher's Day

October 26 is World Teacher's Day. This year the theme is about teacher's beng champions every day. In Canterbury we are facing a big challenge to our profession with the recent announcements of 13 school closures and 18 mergers. The disruption to children and their school communities could be widespread and long lasting.
This link allows you to do something for schools or teachers you know will be facing stressful times. Please nominate a teacher to be an everyday champion. http://www.everydaychampions.co.nz/

Molly took this photo today of our wonderful class being responsible and staying on task.

I Wonder Why?

Today we had to make space on our walls for new paintings, so our Wonder Wall had to come down. We have made it into a book for you all to enjoy.  It might get you wondering about a few things too.

Father's Day.

Yesterday it was Father's Day. It's a really special day. We love to play with our dad. We give him presents. In the morning we give our dad a hug, and a kiss, and we wake him up by saying "Happy Father's Day!"
We make a Man's breakfast for him. We give him his favourite food.
Dad does the things he likes to do, all day. No jobs! We do all the work.
We make him a beautiful, exquisite card, and a nice, heavy, small, special present. And we take him out to dinner.
Dad really loved his day with us.

Poppy made this Wordle for Father's Day.

More Writing Club Stories

Today we feature four new writers. Joseph, Charlotte,Tessa and Paris have written great stories for you.
Our goals have been to write longer stories by using interesting words, and adding details to keep the listener interested. We try new words by writing the sounds we can hear, and underlining our tries. We have to start with a capital letter and put full stops at the end of our sentences. We need to write all our letters the right way too. Lots to think about! Whew!

Check out our photopeach stories in the Older Post section below to see how much we have learned.

Mice in the Kitchen

This week our BIG BOOK has been called Mice in the Kitchen by Jill Eggleton. We really enjoyed reading it and we hope you enjoy listening to us. This is the edited version!
(Katie really wanted to show you that her tooth came out this morning.)

Room 3's Writer's Club

The children in Room 3 are really good at writing stories and they would like to share some of them with you. Hayley and Benjamin used iMovie to make these movies today.

Keep logging on regularly to see more children reading their great stories.

Today Charlotte, Adele and Joseph made movies using our ipads. They had to edit out the bits they didn't need to tell their story.
They observed children at Discovery Time being A+ Learners by being accepting and cooperative. We read a story about Dimitre's lunch and tried new things too. Some of us made sandwiches with feta cheese. Watch the movies to find out what else we did.

Last week we learnt about how the Greek people lived 2500 years ago. We ate Greek food, built the Parthanon and a stadium, and dressed up like they did. The Olympic Games started in Greece and we are learning about the importance of fair play in competition. Isaac and Adele are dressed as Greek people.

In the holidays I went to Lake Tekapo. We went snow tubing and I went Ice Skating with my dad. Ice skating was tricky. I fell over lots. But it was fun. Here is a photo of me Ice Skating.

The Bug Walk

We are clearing the forest behind the classrooms to make a walkway. We want to be able to see bugs and make homes for little creatures. If we look after the environment animals will live there. Time is running out for some animals and we don't want any more animals to become endangered.
We dragged all the dead branches to the heap for Craig to burn. We swept and cleared a pathway but there is still a lot more to do. Craig is going to help us make a wooden edge for the path. Then we can walk along the path without disturbing the habitat for all the creatures living there.

We will make signs to show people the way, and what to look for.

Learning Sign Language

We are learning sign language because Brooke is deaf and we can talk to her using signs. We know the first sound of our name and we can read some stories that use signs we know. Brooke likes animals and music. On YouTube there is the alphabet done in New Zealand sign language. Sign language is different in every country. If you go to live in another country deaf people have to learn a new language too.

Addison's Fotobabble About Dinosaurs

Addison made this fotobabble this morning. She took a photo and drew all over herself to look like a dinosaur. She was a little nervous at first when she was speaking into the microphone, but just listen to discover her understanding of why dinosaurs are extinct now.

Benjamin's first Fotobabble

This is Benjamin's first Fotobabble. He took a photo and made himself into an endangered animal. Listen to him talking about it to find out what the animal is.
Can you guess where he went to learn about Gorillas? You might find a clue further down on this blog.

Story Writing in Room 3 on PhotoPeach

We invite you to read our stories. We are learning to try new words by writing the sounds we can hear. We underline our tries. We are trying to write longer stories and to do the letters the right way. Watch this space for more stories soon.
Mosaic Colour Day on PhotoPeach
On Friday we had a mufti day. We didn't have to wear our school uniform and we could dress up in our brightest coloured clothes. Mrs Hogarth is working with some children to make a mosaic picture out of broken plates and cups. Lots of people have broken china now because of the earthquakes here. We needed to raise some more money to finish the picture, so if you didn't wear a uniform you had to pay.
Photos are by Benjamin.

Fun Run

We had a lot of fun at the domain when we had our Cross Country Fun Run. We had to run a long way and climb over hay bails. The irrigation hoses were going so we got a little bit wet! Our buddies ran with us so we knew the way to go.
When the race was over we got to try lots of new things like sack races and wheelbarrow rides.
It was a great day. Thank you Mrs Hamlin for making it happen.
Most of these photos were taken by the children in Room 3.

Our trip to Orana Park

In our class we are learning to take photographs  by
ourselves. The peacock came to see us when we were
eating our morning tea.
Today we went to Orana Park. We were looking at endangered animals, and how we can
make a difference to save endangered species. The children are also learning to take photographs. Children from our class took all these photos.
The ducks were happy swimming in the river.
The Limas had a fight. They were noisy.

The kea is endangered. They are the only parrot
in the world that lives in the mountains.

Keas have sharp beaks and claws.
They are very cheeky.

This frog was in the reptile house.

Look very carefully and you might see two skinks.
These ones are brown and they are hard to find. Adele took this photo.

Sam is taking a photo of a green skink.
It lives in New Zealand.

There were lots of ducks.

We fed the giraffes. They came and ate lots of
wattle leaves. They have very long, strong tongues.
We had to hold the branches very tight. One giraffe is
going to have a baby.

The white rhinos are endangered. There were only
30 left in the whole world. Now they have been
saved from extinction.

This rhino horn costs as much as a house.
It came off the white rhino because it grew
so big she couldn't eat the grass.

This Gibbon was born in the wild. He is very special.
He had a terrible life before he came to Orana Park.

Parachute Fun

We met our new buddies and played games with them. We played touch rugby and parachute games. Our buddies are the senior children in our school. They help us in the playground, and read us stories. Sometimes they work with us and teach us how to use the computers. The buddies have Pathway tasks they need to complete, and some of the things they need to do will help us to learn.

ANZAC Day at Discovery Time

We made poppies to remind us about ANZAC Day. The soldiers fought a battle in a field of poppies. It was called Flanders field. A lot of soldiers died and never came home to New Zealand or Australia.
At school we learn how to look after our friends. We learn how to listen to other people and to respect them. We can "copy the good stuff."
We hope there will never be any more wars.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

We invited our Grandparents and special friends to school for morning tea. We made scones, and pikelets during Discovery Time, and we made lemonade out of real lemons. We picked silver beet from the school vegetable garden and Sandy helped us make quiche with fresh eggs that her hens laid.
We told our Grandparents about the things in our treasure boxes and why they were special to us. Our Grandparents told us about memories that were special to them.
Addison's grandmother told us about her special teddy bear that she has loved since she was a baby. It has sticking plasters on it to stop it from falling apart.

Treasure Boxes

We decorated boxes to put our special treasures in. We had to think about all the things that are special to us. Some of us put in baby photos and photos of our family. Some of us put in things we found and toys we have had since we were babies.
